Krumholz Effect at Churchill River
I had to take this capture from a moving Tundra buggy on our way back to Churchill from the Tundra. We were almost there and the sun was setting so nicely behind the Churchill river with the steam arising off of it. The spruce trees reveal the "Krumholz Effect" that are one sided fashioned by the heavy prevailing winds and the ice crystals carried by them wear down any new growth. Dehydration on that same side also retards new branch development on that side due to a short growing season. The harsh enviornment and short growing season also stunts the growth resulting in very small spruce trees. Taken with EOS 5D at IAO100, 1/100 sec and 105mm.
